Dear Parents

Dear Mom and Dad,
How is everything going back home? I hope it is going great and you are not missing me too much. It has come to my attention that I am in need of a large amount of money. My car is in the shop and it needs repairs. The parts for this are not cheap, $1200 to be exact. You both know that it is impossible for me to acquire this money because I do not have a job or any way of making money. I could sell drugs and what not but I do not think you would want me putting myself in these dangerous situations. I would also like to point out that I could not come see you anymore on some of the weekends or for holiday breaks. I know you miss me a little and it would kill you to not see your baby . I hope this is reason enough for you to send the money but if it is not just imagine how bored I am sitting in my room all the time. I am unable to go anywhere and get food with all the boys. I use to go all kinds of places with my friends but now we are all stuck in our rooms. For the sake of my friends and I please send the cash to fix this dilemma. Thank you and I love you most!

If you missed class Thursday night...

Here's the Vonnegut reading assignment: "America: Right and Wrong."

Enjoy.

Need A Digital Camera

Mom and Dad,
Hey you guys, Happy Early Thanksgiving! I can’t wait to get home to see you, and on my birthday too! My birthday actually falls on Thanksgiving Day, how often does that happen? Well anyway, that’s what this letter is about; I really need an early birthday/Christmas/I love you because you’re my son/ GIFT. I can pitch in a little for it, but it’s too much for me to buy on my own. I need a digital camera and a good adjustable tripod stand from Best Buy. I will be taking a Mass Communications class next semester and I have to have one; it is a requirement for the course. I promise that I have researched all of the best prices in every store in the area, and this one is the best deal.
Before you answer, please just listen to me. I am already paying full tuition by myself here at Winthrop, and all of that is going to fall on me when I graduate. As you know, I do not have much cash in the bank and what I have now is dwindling fast. I have to have this camera for my major. So please, can you two help me out? I really can’t wait for us to go to Myrtle Beach next week. I’ll see you when you pick me up on Wednesday. Bye!

I'm tired of walking, it's time for a change....

Dear Mom and Dad,

How are you guys doin? I've come to a little delimna over the past few months at Winthrop. I know you're asking eachother, what could possibly be the delimna? Well as you already know, you didn't let me bring my car up here for the first semester, and I think I really need it. I know you're probably thinking that I just can't get everywhere that I want to go. That maybe one reason but there are others.
You remember that Walgreens that you thought was a good idea for us to have close to the school. I'm starting to think it wasn't such a good idea, because that store is pricey. There is a Walmart a few miles down the road, but it is not in walking distance, and I know you would want me to budget my money. See I'm learning already.
Another reason is because, I know you don't like me just getting in the car with anyone. Well with me not having a car, I will have to do that. I'm in college so there are going to be places where I have to go that is not walking distance.
Im not telling you what to do, but it would probably be in your favor to let me drive next semester. I have a work study job so I will be able to pay for gas. So please take that into consideration. Thanking you in advance.

Your loving son,
Akeem Elmore
Dear Mom and Dad,

Wow the time sure does fly. I can’t believe this semester is almost over, but I am so excited to come home and see you both, and Salem and Shadow of course. I have been so busy these past few weeks; it has been packed with assignments, work, and trying not to get sick. That’s a lot! If you two know me at all, you know I wouldn’t be writing if I didn’t want something. First of all as I said earlier the end of the semester is coming up, and with that means new classes and new books. I know that is really exciting, but I need a little help with paying for them, I have some money saved up, but if you guys could help me with the rest that would be great. You help with the books that would allow me to get you two some awesome Christmas presents. And everyone loves a good present from the heart! Speaking of Christmas I was also just checking to make sure that you got my hints for a GPS. I am sure you did, I already pitched my business proposal to you both. I just making sure you or “Santa” should I say got the memo, Garmin please! It really will come in handy for work, so I can know where I am going, and if I wanted to go visit Clemson or Wofford. It is just safer to have something telling you when to turn rather than having to read map quest directions. Thank you so much, love you guys see you very soon.

Lots of love,
XOXO LK
Mommzy and Daddeeeee! How are you. I miss you so much! Life feels so uncertain without your guidance and protection. Your wisdom is my fortress. And you shelter me with your love. I really appreciate you guys and how you have raised me. All my other friends are goin'crazy! They are out gettin' knocked up, busted for drugs, turning gay, smoking weed and committing suicide. This is what makes me thankful thank a at least listened to half of what you taught me. Wow that makes me thankful. Its like my peers have fallen in a trap and I was able to walk out unaffected. I am equipped to with the necessary to fix life problems and avoid downfall. Now comes the time to thank you both. I love you so much. I don't thank you necessarily because of what you have done but who you are, my parents! Its not just the fruit but your vine that gives me life. God has given both of you so much wisdom in the parental role. I give him thanks too. The bible schools and christian activities have paid off. I have become a grown man who walks upright and just. Hard work equals reward. The greater the sacrifice the greater the reward. Both you two and I have sacrificed greatly! Now comes the reward! We should be rewarded with a great Christmas this year! This would be so lovely, eh! We should send Uncle to get a nice tree and let the pine smell fill the house with its nostalgic aroma. We will play Christmas music and sing song by the big boy like Nat King Kole and Bing Crosby. And Momma you can expertly bake all the warm treats with you nurturing hands for all who can handle such heavenly pleasures. The present will look like a mountain under our tree this year. I have a gift for both of you in mind. It will be perfect. Now, I know that you will ask me to make a x-mas list this year. The problem is that I already have everything. I have wisdom, and discernment. You have raised me so that I could sustain and obtain whatever I need or want. But you guys love me to greatly to accept that as a valid answer. So, I guess I will just show you the rear sway-bars that I want to install on the back of my car. It has a lot of body lean when I approach a corner and could potentially flip and roll-over. That is why i would like the sway bar! It would feel better driving the car that handles properly and reduce under steer which is beneficial on curves also. If a car has too much under steer, when the wheel is turned, it will just plow and not steer at all because of the loss of grip on the front tires. Sway bars are an investment to keep me safe, that's all! Both of you know how dangerous these slippery and icy conditions can be so it will help me like you wouldn't belive! But more than that, I just want to spend my holiday with you guys, uncle, my cuz and my dog and kitty! Oh and err... my sister...Thank you guys once more for the what you have done and for the values that you have instilled in my life. I love you sooooooo much. Goodbye!
With love from your only son, Brandon

Dear Mom and Dad

Dear mom and dad,

The Christmas season is coming, and you guys have been asking me for a list of things I want. So here is the list: A plane ticket to Boston. Thats it. Alaina has invited Dana and I to come up before Christmas to spend time with her. And to pick out and decorate her Christmas tree. I have wanted to go back to Boston for the Christmas season since we moved here. I miss the snow, even though it is freezing. I miss all the ice skating and Christmas feelings that comes with the first snow of the season. I miss sledding and snowboarding. Most of all though I miss having the family together there to experience those feelings together. By buying me this ticket you guys can give me most of those experiences that I had as a child and lost once we moved here. Also this will be Dana's first time up there and with all the stuff going on both her and Laina want me there as support and because we all love to hang out together and have fun. Think about it, Dana, Laina, and I can do all the stuff we used to when we lived there. Like go out early in the morning and have a snowball fight, and then come inside, drink some hot chocolate, then go back outside to do some shopping or play in the snow again. We can make cookies, and cakes, and maybe even go see grandma for a Christmas surprise. I am Dana's best friend the one who she spends most of her time with and she wants me there to experience all of those first times she is going to have. Please mom and dad this is what I really want for Christmas.

P.S.
What would be even better is if we were all there together

Love always,
Van

Dear Mommy and Daddy,

How are you guys doing? I miss you all so much. I'm here at school trying to stay on top of this work so I can make you guys very proud of me. Have you realized that Christmas is right around the corner? Time fly doesn't it? It's about that time to start buying gifts for the family. You guys are going to be very surprised when you open your gifts from me! Mommy, earlier this year you told me that I wouldn't get as much gifts like I normally would. So this year, I'm only asking you guys for $200. Before you panick, the money is for a good cause. Uncle Quinton's death was a very tragic death for everyone, and you guys know that we were very close. After he died, do you remember my cousins and I agreeing on getting tattoos in remembrance of him? I'm the olny one that doesn't have the tattoo done yet. I miss him so much and I would like to have him with me always. Mommy, we also agreed on the tattoo so that would be a wonderful gift. I know that it doesn't cost $200 for a tattoo, but I also need a coat and some scarves. The weather in Rock Hill is different from back home. I would like to keep warm! It would really mean a lot to me. I love you guys with all of my heart! You mean so much to me! Kisses!

Love your ONLY baby girl,

LaTesha

Effective Begging

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm just writing you to see how you guys are doing and to hope you are doing well. Here at college I have been bored and have had nothing to do during my spare time. So I think that it would be nice if you all got me something for Christmas that would help fill the gaps in my schedule. I have a few suggestion that will help you choose the right thing. One of the options is an IPhone because it will allow me to call you and keep in contact better along with providing me some games to play. The other suggestion is a little more economic but will still allow me to fill the empty hours. It is just a few movies like iron man, Kung Fu panda, and perhaps if possible the Home Alone series. These movies would provide entertainment along with a good way to relieve stress from the passing exams. I do hope you all are doing well and that you all make a good decision.

Love, Samuel

Letter 2 My Parents

Dear Mom and Dad,
How are you guys doing? I’ve been so busy with school work, trying to improve my GPA, that I loose track of time most days. I’m sitting at my computer typing a paper for my writing class and you guys came to my mind. I really miss you guys. How’s everything on the home front? Mom, guess what, I have to write 6 papers and they are all due around the same time. Pray for me!!! I don’t tell you enough how much I appreciate you. I don’t know where I would be in life if you guys didn’t raise me the way you did. College is hard and expensive. I know that I’m a grown woman, with a job and lots of bills, but I’m having some financial problems. Daddy!!! I love you. I miss you. Daddy your favorite daughter’s car is acting up on her and I know you don’t want anything to happen to her while driving!! I don’t have a dollar to my name at this moment and was wondering if you would give me a few dollars to get my car worked on??? I can here you right now, “What does she think; I’m made out of money?” Ha Ha I know you daddy. I really need to get this work done because it cutting off on me in the middle of driving. I’m scared it will cut off while I’m driving in front of a big tractor trailer truck and that would be the end of your favorite little Smurf. I know you don’t want that so could you please, pretty please go to my bank and put $700.00 in for me that would be great. You’re the best DAD every, oh and mom you are too. Talk to you later.

Lots of Love,
Shana

All I Want For Christmas ...

Dear Mom and Dad,
How is everybody doing? Good I hope, Dad done any work on the boat yet? Knowing him I am guessing that is a no.Well maybe for Christmas I mill get him some boat shoes or something. Speaking of Christmas,it is not that far away. I know you want to start shopping early so I figured I would help you out and let you know what I would love, early. So me and my friends have been trying to work on a spring break trip. We really want to go rent a cabin in Breckenridge, Colorado, and do some spring skiing! We looked up prices and a cabin and flight for four averages about $500 per person for a week. For Christmas, I was think that we could split the cost and your present could be the $250 for the flight. I know it is a lot and that it is a frivolous thing. Just think about all the fun we will have! A couple of girls out in the mountains, snowboarding, shopping, and eating.I have been there before too so I know my way around too. Plus it is a safe place to go.People will be all over the place! I figure if you pay half then I could take care of the rest! This would be such a fun and memorable trip. This would be such a great present, its all I would need and would give me such a great start to the year !
It would mean a lot to me, I already have every thing planned out and our hotel come with a ski pass and food! Also I would send you and cat something, because I know you guys love Breckenridge paraphernalia!
Ok I will see you guys soon!!!
Love, Briana

Christmas Wish

Momma and Daddy,

Can you believe Christmas is just around the corner? In fact, it is only thirty-five days until then! I know how you (Momma) agonize over what to get me for Christmas, and how Daddy always tells you to just buy something and wrap it so you will not be tempted to take it back. Well, this year I am going to take all your worries out of shopping! I will simply tell you what the perfect present is for me. This year, all I want for Christmas is a beautiful pea coat. I know what you are thinking: I have a perfectly fine winter coat already. However, my North Face jacket just is not cutting it here. It does not keep me sufficiently warm. I nearly freeze by the time I arrive at my classes! It does not help that my North Face jacket is so worn out from all the times I wore it last fall and winter! I think it is time for a fresh start, and a new pea coat would set just the right attitude for my fresh start. Not to mention that I would be the cutest girl on campus in an adorable pea coat!!! That is all I really want for Christmas!

Much love, kisses, & hugs,
Summer

Effective Whining

Dear Mom,
As you know, Christmas is approaching and I could really use a car. I know that I am eighteen hours from home and you don't want to have to drive that far alone, but that is why I took it upon myself to ask someone to drive with you. Don't worry about the way back because you can fly back and it'll be cheaper if you book your flight now. Honestly, do you want me catching rides with people I don't know? I have to find a way to practice and back, find a way to liftinging and back and find a way to study hall and back, I mean you don't want me walking in the cold do you? I could get really sick and then you'd get a doctor's bill. Which is worse? When it starts to get super cold, I don't think you'd want to have me walking from the main campus to the coliseum to practice and then walking back in the cold with my pores open. If I had a car, I could drive and turn on my heat to stay warm. I could drive to go get anything I need and not have to worry about asking my teammates. A car would just help me to get around much easier. Going to the doctors office, the dentist, going to get food, medicine, and the airport. I know you don't want to pay for a taxi everytime I leave and come home from the airport, do you? SInce gas is so cheap right now, it wouldn't cost you that much to drive here, plus you always take the short cuts and make it where you need to be faster than what was expected. It doesn't have to be an expensive car, just a car to get me around. I know you won't get me a car that's bound to break down with the paint chipping off and the interior falling apart because you don't want to have to pay to get it fixed. You don't want to have to put more money into the car than you actually paid for the car. So please mom, consider getting me a car. I would really appreciate it. Love always,
TaQuoia

All I Want for Christmas....

Dear Mom and Dad,

As you can see, I've included both of you guys in this email.

I wanted to discuss Christmas this year.  This years needs to be about celebration and should be unforgettable.  Just this time last year, we had no idea that our holidays would be put on hold due to mom's unexpected yet tortuous brain surgeries and subsequent hospital stay.  We had no idea 21 days could be so long and that Christmas seemed to have no meaning when a loved one was suffering.  So, we spent Christmas, New Years and mom's birthday in the hospital.  Who cares that we actually celebrated Christmas in February?  Last year was tough and now a part of the past.

So, instead of making lists for Christmas ideas, shopping like crazy people, and spending mad amounts of money..... LETS GO ON A CRUISE!  Neither of you have ever experienced a cruise.  I have and its wonderful!  I think it would be a great opportunity and if WE ALL pitch in - it will be cheap!  There are some great deals right now if we act NOW.  Yes, I am saying I will forfeit Christmas presents this year IF we take this family vacation.  I know, you're probably thinking, we've been divorced for 13 years.  Why would we do this?  Well, I have the answer.  Mom and Dad, you're better friends now than in the 17 years you were married.  We all get together often enough during the week for dinner "together" - so why not?  We can all pitch in.  If this seems like a crazy idea, just think of it as you're loaning me about $300 buck a piece.  You usually spend more than that on Daniel and me combined -  not to mention, our families!  You just reap the benefit of our enjoyment and it will be better than any expression on our faces from opening any gift!  So, come on!  Think hard about this.  It is really a great idea.  It will be like all those family vacations that our friends talked about that we never experienced.  Let's make it happen.

Picture this......my bottom lip is poked out and I have a really big sad face.  I'm begging.  PLEASE.

Talk to you both SOON!
Love you both LOTS!

Shannon

Christmas Wish

Dear Mom and Dad,
As Christmas approaches, I know you’ve been wondering what I would like for Christmas. I believe I have mentioned art supplies and boots as options. If you have already bought one of these, I will appreciate the gift! If you have not bought my gift yet, I’ve thought of another—more valuable—option. A plane trip to Michigan over break would be awesome!

You may ask, “Why not simply take a trip to somewhere in the state? We could arrange for a weekend trip to the mountains.” Beautiful scenery is not what I would be expecting in a trip. While I would enjoy seeing a lovely landscape, my wish is more for adventure. You can both testify to how much I love adventure—you have accompanied me to numerous Girl Scout campouts and have sent me to a variety of summer events. Somehow, in all these activities, I’ve never been able to travel by plane. A plane ride would be more exciting—and safer—than an eighteen-hour drive.

Of course, at the heart of my wish to go to Michigan is my desire to see Lainey. She is my only girl cousin near my age. We are both at a pivotal point in our lives! I would love to hear about her experiences so far this year at the University of Michigan. So while you may like to see me over Christmas break since I am usually at Winthrop, I ask you to grant me a week-long trip to Michigan. I would always remember how you helped me stay connected to my cousin and gratified my sense of adventure.

Love you guys!
Cara
Dear Moma,

I really need you to send me some money. I could use about $100-200, which sounds like a lot, but I could use it for so many things. First of all, I need to buy Christmas presents for my family and friends. You know I don't have a job (yet), so I really need you to give me this money. I have to get presents for Jessica, you, Maddy, Amanda, and Courtney and David. That is a lot of people to buy for and I don't have the money now. I have used it all buying gas or food or prescriptions. I know I need to be careful with my spending, but I have really tried and I haven't spent much on extraneous things lately. All of the money you have given me has been going towards the things listed above and nothing else.
This being said, I want you to know that I would only use the money to buy Christmas presents, gas, groceries, and prescriptions, although I would mostly use it for the presents. You know that I like to give people good presents and this year I really want to do that again, even though I'm in college and broke. I know Maddy will get me something really awesome like she always does and I want to give her a nice present back. You know how much I miss my best friend, so I definitely need the money to get her something especially good because I never see her because she is far away at SCAD. I also want to get you something nice. I know it's weird that you give me money and I end up buying you a present with it, but I don't have a job and the allowance is my only income for now. Remember that I get you nice things you usually wouldn't buy yourself, but you deserve. I'm doing you a favor. I also need to get my sisters and brother in law something. Jessica usually has a list and there's usually something cheap on it that I can buy, but I never know what to get Courtney and David. I want to get them something nice though because Courtney always gives cute gifts and I want to return the favor.
I like to get in the Christmas spirit and really give people nice things that they will like, so to do that I need some money and I would be very grateful if you did. Things will be easier once I get a job. I submitted my application today for the Mac Lab here on campus and hopefully I will have a job next semester, if not next year for sure. I will also be looking for a summer job this summer along with my nutrition internship. I will be busy and making money soon, so this extra boost will probably only be a one time thing. So could you please send some soon. I also need gas to get back home for Thanksgiving, so I would use some of it for that, but gas prices have fallen, so it won't cost much! I would really appreciate the money and you would be ensured a nice Christmas present, not that it matters much to you, I know. Well I cannot wait to see you at Thanksgiving! I hope things are going well there since I last talked to you.

I love you and miss you,
Alison

All I want for Christmas

Dear Mom and Dad,

There is only one thing I want for Christmas this year. From past experiences, you know that when I only want one present then that means I really want it. This gift would be the new iPOD Nano, 16 GB, and the perfect color, purple. It will be the perfect Christmas present for me for so many reason.

The first reason being, how much I love music. I have been deprived from this cherishment for way too long. The second reason is that this iPod is too cute for me not to have! I know you can see me walking around campus sporting this little piece of technology. I know you think I am crazy because of how expensive it is, but I am not asking for anything else for Christmas. I know you are thinking that you just won't get me anything, but you know you will feel really bad. Plus, I will be able to listen to my music while I am trying to fall asleep, which you know I have been having problems with because it's been so loud in my building. This means that not only do I want the perfect gift, but that I also need it. Just think how easy it will be to get me just one present, and also how happy I will be Christmas morning when I open to find just what I wanted. Is that not what you want, to make your baby girl happy?

Now to make things more simple for you, I have included a website that you can go to inorder to get my iPod shipped to our house. Now isn't that convenient? Oh and you can also get me a protective case to keep this treasure safe. The case is also available online. ( www.bestbuy.com)

Cannot wait to see you in a few weeks for Christmas! It is going to be so nice to be home with my family again. Hope it's not too cold down there like it is up here. Love and miss yall!

XOXO

I read A Case of Religious Discrimination. A religious group called the Summum, asked Pioneer Park in Pleasant Grove City, Utah if they could add its own monument to the park. The park already has many monuments to things like 911 and the Ten Commandments. So they asked if they could put a monument to the group Seven Principles of Creation, which is believed to be handed down from god on tablets to Moses on Mount Sinai. The city denied the group the right for their monument to join the others because they only let people who have ties to the community do it. I think that they deserve religious freedom. If one group can leave a statue of the Ten Commandments the there religious views should be equally respected. I agree that the city ultimately elevated the importance of Christianity above other religions. They only allowed the Ten Commandments; there are so many other religions that are represented in America. It is a free country, and everything from Judaism to Daoism should be accepted. By having all types of religions represented in the park it would only let everyone experience all sides of America. In a public park no one should feel as though they are being discriminated against because they aren’t Christian. We have so many privately owned religious places, but people shouldn’t be confined to those spaces. They should feel accepted no matter where they are. So I agree that the park needs to accept all religions or none at all.

Not Religious Discrimination

In this editorial article I read in the New York Times, it tells about religious group in Utah that wanted to post the ten commandments in a park. I don't see the need in doing something like this. I think it is a great thing to have other religions in the world and would love to learn more about other myself. As a christian I wouldn't want to go to the park and looking at something on display to tell me about a religion. Freedom of speech is something I am thankful that we have in this country, but to post something like that in a park you could offend others. I don't think any religion should have the right to do so. The group could always ask to put up words of encouragement, but to post something that is can be so controversial isn't a good idea. They can stand outside their church or homes handing out fliers or anything with the ten commandments on them and it would probably get around faster. I just disagree with posting them in a park only because I wouldn't be too crazy if another religion tried to do that same. There's nothing wrong with getting your word out just be somewhat respectful.

"Anti-gay, Anti- Family

It's been a while since America has been dealing with the issue of homosexuality. Large wars have been fought about this issue. Will it ever be solved? America is known across the world for having a large homosexual population. The international students at Winthrop will can all attest to this fact. They often inquire about, "The Gays", as my Indian roommate terms this group. Most often their views toward homosexuality are not well thought of. Last night at the dinner table, we made fun of a person of whom a homosexual male had an attraction to. That person was not very happy about the other male who liked him. Then, a very interesting discussion arose from our friendly ridicule about homosexuality. The students all viewed homosexuality in a negative way. A common view of it was "disgusting". But opinions about America and homosexuality are blinding to the facts of homosexuality. Gays and Lesbians now are seeking civil unions, domestic partnerships, and marriages. The battle is with the traditional approach of marriage. Traditional and true marriage is a commitment between a man and his wife. This is how it has been for centuries across the world. True marriage must not be changed to befit other types of loving relationships. This would totally screw up what marriage is about. And if marriage is allowed between two males or two women, then were will it stop? Should two family members who love each other get married because they love each other? No, not in this day and age! Previously in earlier times marriage was enacted between cousins or even brother and sister. But it was always an abomination for homosexual relationships to even exist! If two men or women want to get together, live and love each other, fine, but don't call it marriage! Marriage is between man and his wife! Period!

Editorial Response

"Anti-Gay, Anti-Family"
By Dan Savage

The article "Anti-Gay, Anti-Family" was almost heartbreaking in my opinion. How could someone ban the right to love who they want and have families with who they want without being married? I think that it is wrong to ban a legalized union between two members of the same sex. If they love each other, why should it matter if they get married or not? Love is not constrained to the form of a man and woman together. Show me where it says that being heterosexual is the only right way to be. To further thwart the gay couples, there is the potential of banning people from cohabiting outside of a valid marriage. Even if this was aimed mainly for homosexual couples, this affects those of the heterosexual nature as well. Not only could two male partners not adopt a child, but neither could a man and a woman adopt one who are not married. Marriage has become more of a commercial act rather than the spiritual union of one person to another. It has escalated to the simple minded competition of who has the best dress or is being married in the biggest church. I think that many realize how silly it is nowadays to be married in that sense. If they decide to be together without the legal documents, who has the right to say that it is wrong? Divorce rates are higher than ever compared to about 20 years ago. Not only that but it causes extreme trauma onto the children in the household. This is speaking from personal experience. If a couple wants to remain just that, a couple with out the legal titles of husband and wife, why can't they take care of children? Same with homosexual couples. Who is to say that a married heterosexual couple would be better than an unmarried heterosexual couple or even a homosexual couple? By approving this act, this could take legitimate children away from their mothers or fathers who are in fact, gay. This is too extreme. Some children are taken out of homes for a reason and put into foster care. What if the best option was an unmarried couple? This law would deny it. If we are to stand together as Americans, we need to accept the very nature of every American. Whether that is homosexuality or those who don't want to get married. By approving both of these laws, it just breaks the nation apart further.

Andrew Rosenthal "Tainted Justice"

I would have to agree with Andrew Rosenthal that the West Virginia case about how the justice system can be influenced by the special interest groups should be considered. Because big companies that help fund justices campignes and try and get the justices to help them out. I do not think that special interest groups should be able to fund justices' campigne. When groups do this I believe that you take justice out of the equation and replace it with repayment so the groups get what they want. This is something that I think could be a problem because if you have a case and then you pay one the people who are going to jugde that case that is bribing and is against the law. So I agree with Andrew Rosenthal that the case of the special interest group in West Virigina should be brought up.

Editorial Response

I read the editorial article, "A DNA Backlog." This article talks about how there is a significant backlog of rape kits. A law called the Debbie Smith law was passed a few years ago to try and rid of the backlog of rape kits. Debbie Smith was a rape victim whose rape kit was untouched for over six years. There is a 10 year statute of limitations for rape. Assailants are not being prosecuted because by the time most rape kits are tested and the rapists are found, it has already been more than 10 years. Another issue that is a result of the backlog is that it is taking a long time for DNA to be entered into the database. This is a problem because without it, future attacks are not being prevented, and the older cases that may be linked to new DNA are not being solved. The article talks about how this issue needs to be addressed when the new House and Senate take office. I agree with this completely. This is a major issue that has gone unnoticed for a long time, and it is only getting worse. Rape is not being treated as seriously as other violent crimes, and it should be. These women are not only the victims of their rapist, but are victims of law enforcement. It needs to be required for states to spend a certain percentage of their money to decrease this backlog. A report needs to be sent out about the size of the backlog now, and more reports should be sent out in the future showing how much money has been spent on DNA testing. This should gradually decrease the current backlogs in each state.

Anti-Gay, Anti-Family

I read the "Anti-gay, Anti- Family article" in the New York Times Newspaper by Dan Savage . It talks about the approval of anti-gay amendments in Florida, Arkansas, and California where eighteen thousand same sex couples were married just this past Summer and Fall. All this happened because of proposition 8, which now bans same sex couples and heterosexual couples from adopting children if they are not married. The same sex cuoples marriages are in jeapordy, so adopting a child doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon. It sucks that in order to keep homosexuals from adopting children that the people who voted for this had to also keep heterosexuals from adopting also or it would be unconstitutional. In order to make life hard for others who may seem different, they corrupted the chances of others who may be the same as the epople who voted for this proposition. I strongly believe that same sex couples should be able to adopt a child just as a heterosexual couple should be able to whether you are married or not. There are so many families in this world where the child(ren) either have a aingle mom or a single dad and they are out there providing for their children and putting food on the table, helping them make it to college and still being there for them bc THEY ARE STILL A "NORMAL" FAMILY. No matter if a child may have just their mom or just their dad, that perent still loves and cares for them as any parent would. I don't see why they wouldn't want a child who needs a home to be able to live in a homosexual house hold. Research shows that just because your parents are homosexual does NOT mean that their children will be. Anybody can grow up with same sex parents and be heterosexual. It's happened all the time. So what now, Are they gonna make so new law saying that if you are homosexual you can't have children? Because let's say a homosexual male has sex with a female and the female gives all custodity him, will he not be able to keep the child? The same question can be asked for a female, and she's the one who actually goes through the labor, will they take her child away if she is a lesbian? I just think that it is down right ridiculous!

A Case of Religious Discrimination

I read the article in the New York Times about religious discrimination. Call me blind but I didn't really see it as discrimination. The way that I perceived the city of Pleasant Grove City rejecting the application was that they just want to preserve their city's tradition. The city said their reasoning for rejection was that they only accept displays that directly related to the city's history. Although it is almost obvious that they lied by saying they have been saying that for a decade, they had a point. In my opinion, a person or group of people can't just come in somewhere and expect recognition or praise from anyone. In my religion, christianity, humbleness is something like a virtue and boasting about your religion or asking for recognition in a city doesn't display humbleness. I don't see the city's display of the ten commandments as trying to boast about religion because it seems as though Christianity is apart of the city's history. If the Summums want to display the Seven Principle's of Creation they could very well do that at their church, on their cars, and at their homes but if has nothing to do with the history of the city then the city should not have to let them display in their park.

Political Correctness is Ruining Effective Communication

I read an article by Eddie Scarry in the November 6, 2008 issue of the The Johnsonian. The title of the ariticle was "Problems with P.C. idiocy." As I read the article, I laughed at the good points he made from beginning to end. The basic message of the article was that political correctness, which was prominent in the 1990's, makes effective communication in normal conversation nearly impossible and therefore should be done away with. A personal example he used in the article had taken place during his participation in the student political debate.

He was attempting to explain the irrationality of keeping enemy captives in Iraq comfortable during wartime. However, after commenting on prisoners' 8 daily prayer sessions, (there are actually 5) there was a spark of argument at his words and everyone in the room acted as though they were offended. Scarry points out that while the other students were chastising the political correctness of his choice of words, not one of the students took in his original message (That enemy soldiers should not be treated as if they were guests of the prison). All the students heard was, "and the prisoners' eight prayer sessions." Political correctness is idiocy.

An even more ridiculous example, if that is possible, was seen in a 2002 California lawsuit against a teenage girl for saying the common phrase, "that's so gay" in class. A LAWSUIT? really? That is just going too far with the idiocy of political correctness. I can recall that phrase being spoken more than ten thousand times in my high school years. The word "gay" these days can almost be considered slang, for in most cases it does not in any way refer to homosexuality. I do not know how that 2002 case turned out, but I am definately on the poor girls side.

Scarry goes on to end the article with a bit of humor. Read it in the comments section.

A Case of Religious Discrimination

I read the article A Case of Religious Discrimination, where it talks about Pioneer Park in Pleasant Grove City, Utah. The debate is over whether or not the religious group, the Summum, should be allowed to place a monument in the park which already contains a monument of the Ten Commandments and a September 11th memorial. The monument includes the group's Seven Principles of Creation, which it believes were inscribed on tablets handed down from God to Moses on Mount Sinai. Pleasant Grove City rejected the Summum's request telling the group they only accepted displays that directly related to the city's history. The Summum's sued and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circut in Denver agreed with them that the city had no right to discriminate on the basis of the content of the monument.
Religion is a personal choice and therefore should not be discriminated against. In the Pioneer Park case the discrimination was not on one person but a particular group. It is in the Constitution that we have the freedom of speech. By denying the applicaion for the Summum's monument, they were violating the First Amendment for this group. Unfortunately this type of discrimination happens every day, in every city, town, etc. The reason for the continuance of this discrimination is because of the ability to invent new meanings for the words that the founders wrote. The First Amendment states, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. By not accepting the Summum's application for the placement of their monument, the city was prohibiting the free exercise of this group.

"Anti-Gay, Anti-Family" by Dan Savage

I read the article "Anti-Gay, Anti-Family" by Dan Savage. I was appalled to read about a group of people taking away another, different group's rights. I do not agree with the anti-gay-marriage ammendment that was approved in Florida, Arizona, and California stating that gay couples cannot get married. California used to support gay marriage. According to the article, "18, 000 same-sex couples were married in California this past summer and fall; their marriages are now in limbo". That is heartbreaking for me to hear. I do not completely support the gay lifestyle, because I grew up in the Church and I learned that the bible says it's wrong and against God's will, but I do think that same-sex couples should have equal rights as heterosexual couples. It is especially unfair that California used to support gay marriage and now they've changed their minds and they are leaving all of those same-sex couple who got married in jeopardy. Same sex couples should be treated no differently, in my opinion. They should be treated just as fairly and courteously as opposite sex couples. Furthermore, they should be given the same rights that the rest of America has. This is America afterall. America is the land of the free. Let the gay couples be free. Let them get married. It is only just and fair.
The article also goes on to explain how Arkansas adopted a new law that states that people who are living outside a valid marriage cannot adopt a child or serve as foster parents. The law covers both homo- and heterosexual couples, but it is aimed at the homosexual couples. There are 3,700 childen in Arkansas in state custody and 1,000 of them are up for adoption. Most of the children were mistreated by their parents. It makes no sense to keep unmarried people from being able to adopt children when the children will most likely be better taken care by those couples than they were in their own families or in custody. While the number of children needing homes rises, nothing will be done about this law and many well-deserving couples will not be able to rescue those desperate children. It is sad to read about. I cannot believe things like this are still happening in America. I think that people, married or not, should be able to adopt children, if they are interviewed and deemed suitable for adopting children. Sexual orientation should not matter, either should marital status. I think that the issue should be looked at in terms of whatever is best for the child.

Thomas Friedman's "How to Fix a Flat"

Thomas Freidman’s editorial “How to Fix a Flat” deals not with what its title would imply, but with the apathy of an automobile manufacturer. General Motors (GM) proudly describes itself as the “annual global industry sales leader for 77 years” at
http://www.gm.com/corporate/about/. With such prominence in sales it would seem that the corporation would not need to be begging for money. Yet this is exactly the situation as of last September. After asking for $25 billion in loan guarantees, the company received help from Congress. The result was freedom to use dishonest advertising and customer bonuses: GM could stretch the truth about the MPG their cars featured—in exchange for making these vehicles capable of using ethanol—and could offer gas discounts to customers.

The complaints and tactics of GM outraged New York Times columnist Thomas Freidman—I myself am inclined to concur. Freidman argues that GM wasted its time complaining when it could have been working on designs for more efficient vehicles. Such vehicles are now old news for companies like Honda and Toyota—why should GM be allowed to lag behind?

Freidman also berates the lenience of Michigan’s legislature in dealing with GM. The company should not have been allowed to ignore energy and environmental concerns.

Instead of dodging responsibility, GM should search for ways to create more efficient vehicles.

Dan Savage: "Anti-Gay, Anti-Family"

I disagree with the anti-gay amendments that were approved last Tuesday. In Florida, Arizona, and California, same -sex couples were banned from getting married. Even though some feel that being married to the same sex is wrong, I believe that people shouldn't have the right to tell someone who they can or cannot marry. It's sad hearing about those who live in the same country that I live in going through this phase of being treated unfairly. Regardless if a couple is of the same sex, shouldn't they be able to marry someone that they truely love. I don't see what is the big issue about the situation.

They are not only banning the marrying of gay couples. They are also banning those who are "cohabitating outside a valid marriage" from serving as foster parents or adobting children. Every child has the right to feel accepted and loved. If couples want to share their love with a child, why not let them? In the article Dan Savage made a point. He stated," A gay man living with his male partner cannot adobt his deceased sister's children. This really saddens me everytime I think about it. He also made another statement saying, "If lesbian couples are unfit to care for foster children, are they fit to care for their own children?" I wonder have people thought about that particular situation before that formed these laws? They need to realize that this is an unfair game that they are playing.

"Movies stigmatize other cultures" by Thomas Cornelius

Thomas Cornelius wrote an editorial about how the American movie industry often defiles cultures that are different. He came to this conclusion by thinking how Hollywood portrays certain cultures. For instance, he named such movies as "Freedom Strike," "The Delta Force," and "Rules of Engagement" that have radical Muslim characters. Because movies tend to focus on extremes, it would seem that every Muslim is a radical terrorist, but this is certainly not true by any means. He goes on to say that because Americans are supposed to set a good example, the movie industry should be more sensitive to how they portray other cultures.

I agree with Cornelius completely. Hollywood definitely lacks in consideration of how their movies will sit with viewers outside of the U.S. or viewers who do not fit in the typical American culture. I date a Costa Rican, and whenever we watch a movie, action in particular, he always comments on how the Hispanic character dies first. This upsets him because he feels that the American move industry does not consider Hispanic characters to be worthy of not dying first. Because of him, sometimes I see the U.S. as he, an outsider, would, and it definitely can be offensive or insensitive at times. Hollywood needs to undergo an attitude change and start thinking globally as to how their movies will affect multicultural viewers.

Bob Herbert: “Beyond the Fat Cats”

I agree with Bob Herbert for the most part when he is discussing the current economical situation. If the government can instantly have billions of dollars on hand to bail out large corporations then why can’t they use their money to solve other problems? I don’t agree about the part where he says the current bailout plan is only helping a select few, the fact is a lot of people have stock so when two major corporations go down, so does everyone else. However, the national debt is steadily increasing and no one really thinks about it. Yea it has sticker shock but “hey why worry about it?” The national debt will never be paid off so why not just keep running it up? If we can so easily throw 700 billion dollars at corporations so they do not go bankrupt, why can’t we get the money to solve hunger in America? Alternatively, they could provide houses for homeless people, supply work for everyone that needs a job, and help people get off government care and start making positive changes to their life. There are so many things that could be done with that much money that would far benefit America then what it was used for.

Homework: Blog in response to an editorial article.

Pick and read an editorial article from the New York Times Opinion section, or from the opinionated offering of Winthrop's own Johnsonian. Write a 200 word blog post in which you agree or disagree with the argument made in the opinion article. Make sure to give thoughtful supporting reasons for why you agree or disagree with the article. Make sure to include the author of the article's name, and the title of the article (in quotation marks!). If you think that your response is worthwhile, and you chose to respond to an article from The Johnsonian, I think that you can post it as a comment under the article. Go ahead. Crush the assertions of your colleagues.

NoBama

I have learned through my grandmother never to tell people who to vote for. I cannot remember which election during which this incident happened, but basically, this woman told my grandmother to vote for a specific candidate. If you knew my grandmother, you would know how stubborn she can be. She does not like being told what to do. Being the rebel she is, she voted for the opposite candidate. Ironically, that was also the opposite she would have originally voted for. Yes, this is very childish and silly. Our whole family knows.
I am not going to tell anyone who to vote for, but I will tell you who I am going to vote for (or voted for, since this is late). I voted for John McCain. I am not going to for him because he is white and his opponent is black. I am not going to lie, I am going to vote for John McCain because that's who my family is voting for. I am not interested in politics, and I never really have been. I know that voting for someone because someone else is going to is not right, but the way I look at, at least I voted. Also, I did make my own decision to vote and who I am going to vote for.
My opinion is vote for whom ever you think is the right person. Hopefully next election, I will be alittle more interested in politics.

Go Bama

I have my many reasons why i chose Obama. Originally I was a Hillary supporter all the way. It was disappointing not seeing her on the ticket but soon after that Obama really grew on me. I have many liberal views and couldn't convince anyone to vote for a certain person. Voting shouldn't be because of party or in this case even race but for the person who will get the job done. To me, Obama had many of those qualifying characteristics and I am happy to know he will be our next president. With Biden on his side, he has an advantage with foreign affairs. Peeople say Obama doesn't support the military, that is not true he doesn't support our troops fighting in a war that should have never been started. Every war that the United States has been involved since the very beginning has only been 4 years maximum. Not many realize that but we have now been in Iraq for 6 years or so. I do believe McCain could have brought change too but Obama I believe and trust a little more. To be honest our country just needs someone better than Bush. Whoever was to take the spot as president really had a job waiting for them and not Obama has a lot in his hands. It is sad to see the ignorance, especially from students on campus, saying they want to leave the country. Honestly, we are all Americans and our country has been through a lot and still continues to so we must stand behind our president for his sake and for ourselves. OBAMA 08!

CHANGE!

Yeah, Barrack Obama, "the skinny kid with the funny name", will definitely be the best man to vote for. Reguardless of the controversy of his race and religion, he poses the best energy and motivation that Senator John McCain just doesnt have. Obama has charisma! McCain has arthritus! But dont fret for McCain, because Obama's policies on health care will aid him for the rest of his life. Obama's motto is "change". With an unhealthy economy and home mortgage crisis Obama might promises redemption. Most Republican carry on about how Obama will turn America into a socialst entity and ,in the classic Robin Hood way, give the rich people's hard earned money to the poor. Obviously giving to the poor is a detremental liability to the rich and their votes should be given to Obama! But Obama's intrisic plan is to help middle-class america with the tax cuts. And what about Mrs. Sarah Palin? Where did she come from? As if Carribou Barbie knows how to run a freakin' country? Vote for Barrack Obama! Change!

Republican or Democrat?

This year marked my third time voting for a Presidential election. WOW!

Each and every one of you have your opinions. I would not dare badger you for voting on one side or another. However, I am republican and conservative - the majority of the time. It is rare but I do agree on some democratic views. Regardless, this year did in fact make history and I'm alive to witness and be apart of it.

I am a McCain supporter. Who cares that he's 71. It bothers me that people are ingorant when speaking of such. It's not fair when you take what you've heard versus FACTUAL information and formulate your opinion. Ronald Reagan was 69 when elected in office. He ran our country with Alzeimher's!

I decided to vote Christian. Not Muslim or any other denomination.

One reason I was not supporting Obama for the reason that he was/is taxing small businesses. I do not expect any of you younger students to follow my reasoning; however, I have been employed and paying taxes for 13 years. Yes, I've worked since the age of 14! It just so happens that I am employed by a small business, one that will be affected. Guess what that means for me? NO RAISE this year or any year, for that matter (hypothetically speaking). I work hard to earn my paycheck and my job isn't just my job; it's my career. Therefore, I deserve to be compensated but my employer should not be punished double either.

I guess at this point, it doesn't matter. I did my part and voted. The election is over. Obama is our President elect - and I will support my country as I have always.

Election 08

Election day has already passed, but I can still tell you that Obama was the candidate you should have voted for in this election. As you have already heard numerous times, it is indeed, time for change. When it comes to important issues, I mostly agree with what Obama stands for. Abortion is one of these issues. Like Obama, I believe that it is a woman's right to choose. Nobody should have a say in what a woman wants to do with her body. To tell someone they cannot have an abortion violates one's privacy. The economy is another major issue that needs to be considered. Barack Obama plans to make middle-class tax cuts that will help people's financial situations. McCain and the Republican party are more concerned with the wealthy. Obama's foreign policy could use some revision, but for the most part I am confident in what he has planned for this country. The number of troops overseas needs to decrease, but it needs to be done gradually. I think that No Child Left Behind is the dumbest thing that has ever been passed. Obama plans to make revisions to this act, that are greatly needed. There are many other issues that I could go on and on about, but I think that you get the idea. Barack Obama is the best candidate to be this country's president.

Election 2008

I fortunately and unfortunately could not participate in this election. I say fortunately because I got tired of hearing empty promises, lies, and mud slinging a long, long time ago, and just stopped paying attention. I felt that if I had voted it would have been by ennie-meanie-mynie-moe and not as an informed voter. I say unfortunately because now I didn’t get to be apart of a historical event, and I cannot complain for the next four years, and im not even registered. Being independent minded I probably would have voted for Obama, purely because he stayed consistent with his campaign promises and he is different from what we have had for the last eight years. Change is his main promise; I look forward to seeing what he can do. Now that our government is predominantly democratic, change is definitely upon us, with all the liberals pushing their new different ideas. My only hope is that Obama will enforce his promises and restore America back to it glory. It is indeed a time of great change; Obama has defied the odds and become the first African American president, let's see what he's got!

Time For A Change!!!!!

Voting for a president was a big deal this year. For one, the next president would have to be someone who could reconstruct America's economy. Another reason is because an African American had a chance to be the 44th president. Based on both candidates policies and how they plan to govern America, I would advise you to vote for Barack Obama. I say this not only because I am a democrat but because he is looking out for the people. To me Obama is basically saying that it is time to stop making the poor poorer. He is trying to do away with poverty, which is a big issue not only in America but the world. His economic plan is to help that working family, who still seems to be struggling. He also wants to give tax cuts to Americans making less than $150,000 a year, and a tax increase on those making more than $150,000. Now I dont know about you but I know more middle and lower class families than upper class families. So he would be helping out the majority. I believe that Obama is the best way to go. Even though he already won!!!!!!Obama '08'.

Election

Since the election was yesterday, I can no longer tell you who to vote for. Though I can however, tell you who I think you should have voted for. I think that you should have voted for Barack Obama because I honestly do think that it is time for something different. I believe that John McCain would be the exact same as George W. Bush in all of his ways. I believe that neither one of them can make any real changes because all of my faith and hopes are put into God and that's the only person who I think can really do anything about the war, taxes, the poor, etc. However, I would hope that you still voted for who ever you believe is the best for this country. I don't think that anybosy can tell you who to vote for though.

Election 2008

I didn't vote. Not because I didn't want to, but because I couldn't get back home to cast my vote. I was ignorant of the fact that I could send in an absentee ballot. I found out only three days ago about that alternative. But to be honest, it would not have made a difference in the outcome. I would have voted for Barack Obama, but I knew he was going to win anyway; I felt it. Given the circumstances, I cannot tell you who to vote for because the election is over, however IA am hopeful that you lent your support for Obama.
Barack isn't a seventy year old veteran with a lifetime of military and public service. But he is what is best for our country right now.
We do not need to be in Iraq. We do not need McCain's healthcare reforms. We do not need a man who is a puppet for the GOP. And we do NOT need a reincarnation of Bush in these troubling times.
We need Barack Obama and all of his campaign promises to be realized. People say that Obama will lead to change? They are absolutely right, and that change will begin the moment he steps into office. He is young, yes; but age sometimes means nothing when dealing with competency. America has every bit of confidence in Barack's ability to lead us. And he will change this world for the better.
I regret that I was unable to do so myself, but I hope that you went to the polls this morning and showed your support for our new President: Barack Hussein Obama.

Obama Vs McCain

I believe you should vote for who ever exemplifies your views the best. I would be considered a disaffected because I am in the middle of the liberal and conservative scale. I personally will be voting for Obama because I believe in his views for our country. I support his ideas on the war in Iraq, abortion, economic issues, and the fact that he is much more unlike president Bush than McCain is. My views are biased and so are everyone else's so the best thing to do would be to vote for who you want and to block out all the persuasion going on in this blog.

Election '08

The presidential election is between Obama and McCain. I tell you which one to vote for because I have not decided which one I am going to vote for. They both say that they will bring change and will make things better but how do we know those things will make things better. Take for instance removing troops from Iraq will that help or will it lead to increase in terrorist activities in that area which will lead to a rippling effect that will hurt us in the end. Now will leaving the troop help by controlling the area or trying to create a controlling and stable government or will that be just a big waste of time. Of course the answer to these questions will not be answered until after the next four years so I do not know who to tell you to vote for only to tell you to vote for who you think will do the best job.

Election '08

This 2008 election has made history! It's the first time a woman and an African American has been so close to the white house. After completing my absentee ballot last week, I felt very excited. This is my first time voting and it's something I would be able to tell my children and grandchildren. This is so amazing!

I voted for Barack Obama. One major issue that's happening in the world today is the war in Iraq. Obama disagrees with the war and promises to remove the troops within 16 months of taking office. Unlike Obama, John McCain supports and want to keep the troops there until the war is won. It's a very crazy plan because look at all of the troops we have lost over the years.

Health care is another important issue. Obama plan to have health care coverage mandatory for children. He would also require more employers to either offer a type of plan to help pay for employee cost or pay into a national health care network. If elected into office, McCain would rely more on individuals and the free market to lower costs, while Obama would rely on the government to make health care coverage more affordable. With savings, Obama would require companies to automatically enroll their employees in 401 (k)s. He wants the government to expand low and middle income workers' savings. To accomplish issue, Obama plan to increase some companies' taxes in a few ways.

The president of the United States is not the only important individual coming into office. What about the Vice President? John McCain's vice, Senator Sarah Palin, doesn't have enough knowledge about McCain's plans to become Vice President. During the Vive President's debate, Palin was not answering the questions being asked to her. She would just things that would sound correct. There also were times when Obama's vice, Senator Joe Biden, correct Palin when she mentioned incorrect names. That was really embarrassing on Palin's behalf. If McCain would become President and something happened that required Sarah Palin to take his position, she wouldn't know how to run a country. Point it, Barack Obama would be the best candidate for President of the United States. On November 4th we can make that happen.

Presidential Election '08

I just got back from voting and luckily it didn't take long at all. There was absolutely no wait. I was amazed to see all of the different presidential candidates running. There aren't just three (democrat, republican, and independent), there were about 6 or 7, although only 2 have a real chance of winning (Obama (d) and McCain (r)).
This election will be determined mostly on the economy, since it is doing so poorly right now. So, whichever candidate the public thinks will do a better job with the economy will most likely get voted for. Hopefully America will look at all of the key issues of each candidate for this election.
I voted for Obama because I think he, overall, has some really great ideas that could really help this country. First of all, he plans to take us out of the war, carefully. The war is a very key isssue in the election as well as the economy. I don't think America should stay in this war, because i think we aren't really helping our fellow countries; we are only causing more problems. Obama wants to begin to pull out our troops carefully, but leave some troops in Iraq to protect the American embassy. I think that this is a great idea because the war is putting the U.S. further and further into debt each day and it's not really doing anything for us, so I agree with Obama's stance on the war in Iraq.
Obama's stance on healthcare is also important. He wants to make sure everyone can get healthcare in America by ensuring guaranteed coverage, without disqualifications because of pre-existing illnesses and conditions. He wants healthcare packages to cover all essential medical services. He also wants to give the public portability and choice; meaning that participants in the new plan can move from job to job without changing their healthcare coverage. All of these are great ideas for the American public. I know my mom changed jobs and she had to change her healthcare provider and it was a hassle. Obama's healthcare plan seems easier to deal with and it will allow more people to have healthcare coverage.
Obama plans to do way more with the environment than McCain plans to. The environment needs attention too and the U.S. needs to come up with alternative fuel sources so we won't depend on foreign oil as much as we currently do. Obama has several intelligent plans for the U.S. to reduce carbon emissions, restore grasslands or start new farming practices that would capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, invest in new technologies that are more gentle to the environment, and begin to build new fuel-efficient cars.
Finally, Obama's plan to tackle America's economic crisis puts him over McCain in my book. Obama wants to eliminate income taxes for lowest-earning Americans. This is a good idea because the poorest class shouldn't have to pay taxes when they can barely afford what they need to survive. Without the worry of taxes, they could pay for things like food a little easier, and might not have to rely on food stamps as much, which in turn, would help the gov't who gives out the food stamps. Obama also wants to fight for a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support American jobs. America needs jobs right now, since so many Americans are unemployed. The promise of job support will hopefully encourage people to vote for Obama, a president who wants to help the public. He also wants to raise the minimum wage, which should really spike the interest of most teens (college age kids who are of voting age) who have part-time minimum wage jobs. Obama also wants to simplify IRS tax filings for the middle class. That does not have much of an effect on me personally, but in the future when I have to file my taxes, I don't want it to be such a difficult ordeal, so I am in favor of making filing taxes easier.
Because of these things I have mentioned as well as Obama's stance on other smaller, yet still important, key issues, I have decided to vote for Obama. I think he is the voice of change and hope in this country and he could really help the country out in our time of need.

Truth,Change, and Prosperity: Are All Possible?

So many promises, so much mudslinging. Do the candidates realize that with all the mess they are creating, it is difficult to see what they truly represent? When I finally took the time to face the proliferated stats on the candidates, I realized that who I thought I would support in this election was not offering the kind of change I would most value. While looking over the webpages found on http://www.votesmart.com/, it dawned on me that are more than two options in this election. It was similar to flipping through posters, almost settling for an all-right print, then finding at the back of the stack your favorite yet. So while looking at the biographies and opinions of the Independent candidates today, I discovered the nearest-to-perfect candidate I could choose.

Enter Chuck Baldwin, a writer, journalist, talk show host, and pastor from Pensacola, Florida. His campaign slogan "Let The Truth Be Heard!" clued me in as to why I had never heard of him. Though most United States citizens are crying for change, no such anthem is heard concerning the truth. How could it be, with the glamourization of lying in what we Americans digest as entertainment? How could it be, with so many women denying the truth that they are murdering an unborn human when they have an abortion? Chuck Baldwin promises to implement changes if he enters the presidential office, but they are not likely what most Americans are clamoring for. Most likely, they will involve more than one "Inconvenient Truth" that this nation needs to face.

So enough about our country's need for a voice of truth. What does Baldwin actually have to say? To start, his plan for the economy is a purging of all the international trade and government regulation of the present. As U.S. citizens earn more money due to this plan, he would allow them to keep more of the money they earned by replacing the federal income tax with tariffs. Less of their income would be given to government hand-out programs such as welfare. According to Baldwin's vision, the government would play no part in the issuance of free healthcare, the regulation of business, or even in education. This would mean the elimination of programs that inhibit rather than help education, such as No Child Left Behind, and the freedom of parents to use vouchers to send their children to the public or private school of their choice. Would such services be offered to illegal aliens? Not under Baldwin's agenda. Efforts to decrease illegal immigration would include stronger penalties for employing an illegal alien and enforcement of public agencies so as to discourage serving illegal aliens. His view concerning illegal immigration is similar to his conviction regarding foreign affairs--the United States should be independent from the problems of other nations. This includes any kind of military aid. Will this mean less homeland security propagation? Yes. In fact, much of the nation's current budget would be cut out entirely. Such funding would not be necessary in a land where the freedom to defend oneself, protect one's rights under the Constitution, and conduct business without government interference would be a reality. Chuck Baldwin is the only candidate who has dared to suggest changes that could ultimatley bring this freedom. He is also the only candidate who has promoted the need for truth in this nation. I, for one, will not be ashamed to vote for one who has been "pushed to back of the pile," who can offer with a single vision the truth, change, and prosperity hoped for in America.

Election '08

This election is historic! This election has seen the first female candidate for president and vice president and the first African American candidate for president. With our country experiencing hard times in many areas, this election is an opportunity for America to undergo a change. Now, the question is who can bring forth the most positive change: the experienced Republican, the smooth talking Democrat, or an underdog.

John McCain, a conservative Republican, has served in the U.S. government since 1982. He served in the U.S.A military; therefore, he is well read when it comes to the military and security. In addition, he is rather old, so he could fall into ill health.

Barrack Obama is a smooth talking Democrat and is a force to be reckoned with across the nation. He is in favor of universal healthcare for children. He also says he will cut taxes to help families get through this tough economic time. On the down side, Obama is inexperienced, so only time will tell how well he performs under crisis.

A third candidate, no doubt the underdog, is Independent Ralph Nader. He has run in every election since 1992, and has lost all four elections. The guy deserves a chance to win just so he can stop running!

Basically, choose which issue is more important: the economy or the war, and that will decide which candidate is best. The future of America is in your hands, so choose wisely!!
